Aurora Matrix
LED-Ready Lamp Matrix Driver Board
Smooth, filament-like inserts. No ghosting. Every lamp checked at power-on.
If you've converted your WPC machine's playfield inserts to LEDs, you've probably seen the problem. The original electronics were designed for filament bulbs. A filament glows on and fades off; an LED snaps on and off in an instant, so flashing inserts look harsh. Depending on your power driver board and the LEDs you've fitted, LEDs can also ghost: a faint glow from lamps that should be off.
Aurora Matrix fixes this. It bypasses the original lamp matrix drivers and drives all 64 lamps itself, and it plugs straight into the existing wiring. There's no soldering, no cutting and no modification to your machine.
Why buy Aurora Matrix
- Filament-like ramps. Every LED ramps on and off smoothly, the way a filament bulb does. Fast-flashing lamps look steady, just as the game designers intended.
- No more ghosting. Aurora Matrix precisely controls the column and row drivers, so lamps that should be off stay off.
- Every lamp set your way. Each lamp has its own maximum brightness and its own turn-on and turn-off times. Tame an LED that dazzles, or give a big insert a softer, warmer ramp.
- Configurable lamp brightness response. Gamma 2.2 (default), logarithmic, linear.
- Configurable lamp ramping. Filament like (default), soft, very soft, smooth.
- Configurable matrix scan rate. The scan rate can be set to 62.5 Hz, 125 Hz or 250 Hz.
- Mix LEDs and filament bulbs. Aurora Matrix automatically recognises and configures any filament bulbs that are still fitted.
- Lamp self-check at every power-on. Aurora Matrix measures every lamp and identifies dead or missing bulbs and short circuits.
- Lamp protection during play. If a fault develops, Aurora Matrix finds the lamp responsible within a fraction of a second and switches it off, protecting the board and your machine. The other lamps carry on as normal.
- Built-in troubleshooting. A self-test lights the whole lamp matrix without the machine's game code in control, so you can tell at once whether a fault is in the machine or in your lamps, sockets or wiring.
- Bypasses the original power driver board electronics.
- Status LED. A status light that shows the board's health at a glance.
Fitted in minutes, with just a screwdriver
Includes a new ribbon cable, and uses the machine's original wiring and connectors. Every connection is plug-in, apart from one screw for the ground lead.
Set it up your way
Aurora Matrix works straight out of the box. To fine-tune it, connect a computer with Chrome or Edge using a USB-C cable and open the free configuration tool. There's nothing to install and no drivers are needed. Downloadable, shareable friendly-names files make lamps easier to identify, or you can create your own. Adjust the settings of each lamp individually. Firmware updates are simple too.
Works with Aurora GI
Aurora Matrix and Aurora GI work side by side: Aurora GI drives the general illumination, Aurora Matrix drives the playfield inserts.
Compatibility
Bally / Williams WPC-89, WPC-S and WPC-95 machines. Aurora Matrix is designed for machines whose lamp matrix has mostly been converted to LEDs, but it can drive some filament bulbs.
For Williams System 11, Data East and Stern Whitestar/S.A.M machines, see our Afterglow (Inserts) board.
