New Aurora GI firmware: smoother end-of-game dimming

Aurora GI LED general illumination board, top view

New firmware for Aurora GI is out now, along with an updated configuration tool. You'll find both on our support page.

This is an optional upgrade. Everything it fixes is cosmetic: it changes how your GI looks in a few situations. If you're happy with how your GI looks, there's no need to update.

Smoother end-of-game dimming

At the end of a game, many machines dim the GI one level at a time, a step every fraction of a second. Filament bulbs blur those steps into one gentle fade. On earlier Aurora GI firmware you could see each step.

The new firmware merges those steps into one smooth fade. When the brightness goes down, the change now starts straight away and looks just as even as a rise in brightness. And when the game keeps stepping the brightness the same way, Aurora GI gives every step its full maximum ramp time, so one step flows into the next. Fast GI effects, which go down and straight back up, still use the quick minimum ramp time, so they keep up with the game just as before.

For the smoothest fade, set the maximum ramp time to 400 ms in the configuration tool (the Ramp Time column on the GI Strings tab).

Two small fixes

  • A GI string could briefly go dark when the game dimmed it from full brightness, especially when the strings were at different levels.
  • When the machine switched all the GI off, for example while starting up or resetting, some strings could stay lit. They now always go fully off.

If you do update the firmware, download the new configuration tool as well, so it recognises the new version. The full list of changes is on the release notes page, and section 14 of the User Manual explains how to update your board.
